First batch of Indians returns from Iran after govt advisory amid unrest

Several Indian nationals returned from Iran and arrived at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi late on Friday, following an advisory issued by the Indian government amid escalating unrest in the region. The returnees included students, workers and pilgrims who chose to leave as the security situation deteriorated.

The Ministry of External Affairs said it is closely monitoring developments in Iran and remains committed to the safety and well-being of Indian citizens. The Indian Embassy in Tehran had earlier advised nationals to use available transport options, including commercial flights, to leave the country due to the evolving situation.

Those who returned described difficult conditions, including protests on the streets, travel disruptions and prolonged internet shutdowns that cut off communication with families in India. Several returnees said they were unable to contact relatives or the embassy for days, which caused anxiety and fear.

Family members gathered at the airport to welcome their relatives home, expressing relief and gratitude for the government’s coordination. Relatives of pilgrims and students said they had been deeply worried due to the lack of information and worsening situation in Iran.

Officials clarified that the flights were regular commercial services and not part of a formal evacuation. However, authorities remain prepared for any contingency, and Indians have been strongly advised to avoid non-essential travel to Iran until further notice.

The unrest in Iran began in late December and spread across multiple regions, prompting advisories from Indian authorities. The government said it will continue to assess the situation and issue further guidance as required to ensure citizen safety, reports said.
